Research On Gender And Education - 2034 Words

1. Introduction This part will be devoted to reviewing previous researches concerned with the study of gender in education, mainly, the studies that tackle the issues of gender in the classroom in general, i.e. those studies that investigate gender in classroom interaction in different subjects; in addition to other studies that explore the role of gender in the language classroom, and how the focus of the research on gender in the classroom interaction has evolved through time. 2. Gender and Education 2.1. Introduction In comparison to other fields of study in education, the scope of gender in education can be classified as a relatively new domain to be explored in educational research, Hillary stated that â€Å"gender equality in†¦show more content†¦223) .In this research, however, the focus will be mainly on studies related to gender in the spoken discourse of classroom interaction which â€Å" has been the topic of numerous articles† (Sunderland, 2004, p. 222). According to the different literature in this field, gender has been studied not only in different subjects varying from science, mathematics, second and foreign languages; but also at different levels (primary, secondary, and higher education) and that may reflect the importance this domain has gained in education. Before proceeding further, a point needs to be mentioned about the fact that most of studies are undertaken in a western context. Unfortunately, the Asian and African contexts lack studies in this field or still unexplored up till date as far as the studies reviewed in this research until now, Sunderland (2000) stated that â€Å" regrettably, most of the work reported here is from the UK, USA, Canada and Australia ... there is still however lack of material from developing countries† (p.203). The purpose behind quoting this statement is not to indicate that there is no research done in no-western context, but rather, to emphasize the fact that there is still a need for more
